The Broken Arrows Rock Climbing

35.7358, -106.764
Trad, sport. Boasting some of New Mexico's best granite sport climbing, this area is a sharp contrast to the red and brown color surrounding it. Short approaches, less than vertical to vertical rock, and mostly single pitch sport climbs. However, there are some trad lines here and a few multi-pitch climbs. The rock quality varies, and some can be quite loose. A helmet here is not a bad idea.
Rock Climbing
Juno Tower Rock Climbing

35.81619, -106.58255
Sport. This is a nice little Jemez crag composed of the same rhyloite rock as Las Conchas and Area 37. This type of rhyolite is dominant throughout most of the Jemez. It is rough on the hands with a gritty texture that is surprisingly solid. The Juno Tower is south-facing, gets sun most of the day and is also shaded from trees in many spots. This little area has easy access as it is right off the road.
Rock Climbing
Ponderosa Bouldering Climbing

35.68569, -106.65638
Bouldering. Ponderosa is acclaimed as the best bouldering in New Mexico. Climbing ranges from thin face problems to steep overhung burl-fests with both lowball and highball climbing. The rock is volcanic tuff, but quite different from the popular tuff area, the Happys in California. Ponderosa doesn't have the thick and solid patina layer that the Happys does. Where there is thick patina here, it is probably choss. But where the patina is thin, it is awesome and very grainy, making for excellent pocketed face climbs. Conversely, the climbing on the underside of the boulders is quite similar to the Happys.
Rock Climbing
Capulin Tower

35°46'28.0"N 106°23'03.3"W
Trad, Sport. Capulin Tower is a semi-detached 120' tower formation in the middle of The Hinterlands. The tower itself boasts two routes, an enjoyable two-pitch route to reach the top via 5.10+ climbing and a gorgeous 110' overhanging finger crack crux crack line, Petrichor Crack, right up the middle of the tower.
Rock Climbing
Monster Wall Rock Climbing - Werepig Route

35.84554, -106.52006
Sport, 80 ft. The Monster Wall proper is steep, with some good harder routes in the middle and flanked on the sides with easier routes. Intricate side to side climbing with a fun crux at the roof.

Climb left of the bolt line for a good bit in the lower third of the route. Cool switch back right to the bolt line up just past half way. Bust out left again for a move or two before great jugs take you over the fun roof moves.

The Corrales Bosque Preserve consists of a narrow strip of land containing a natural cottonwood forest and associated riparian habitats that include shrubs such as coyote willow and New Mexico olive. Riparian habitats are particularly important for avian communities in the arid Southwest. As such, the Preserve was designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA) in 2013. Many bird species nest in this area and the endangered Southwestern Willow Flycatcher and the Western Yellow-billed Cuckoo, a species of conservation concern, have been observed in the bosque habitats. The Preserve is also an important stopover habitat for many migrants that pass through on their ways south and north, and it provides habitat for wintering Bald Eagles.
