Dana Patterson Roth: Seeking the Ephemeral

Creative photography by Dana Patterson Roth will be on display August 30 through September 25, 2022. A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, September 17, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Born and raised in New Mexico and a long-time Placitas resident, Dana Patterson Roth fell in love with photography the first time she picked up her mother’s camera at age five and at age 10 she purchased her first camera, a Kodak Instamatic for $10. Dana has studied photography and painting at UNM, the Santa Fe Photography Workshop and other venues. Her work has been in the InSight Women’s Photography Exhibit, Placitas Studio Tour, Placitas Artist Series and other shows in Albuquerque and Placitas. She helped found the Placitas artist collaborative, Wild Hearts Gallery.

Enamored with black and white documentary photography, Dana concentrated on documentary, portraiture and event photography for many years. When she reluctantly switched to digital photography, she quickly embraced color and slowly she began to let go of self-imposed rules and traditional guidelines. She now works in both B&W and color, often reinterpreting how a camera can be used, and finding other ways to create photographic images such as using a scanner. Dana frequently utilizes various printing media including wood and aluminum. In Seeking the Ephemeral, Dana captures fleeting moments that may or may not exist.

“I’m drawn to making images that soften my perception of the world. By moving my camera during exposure, I am able to create dreamy, painterly images that are more about feelings and mood than documentation. The water images convey how I feel when I’m moving through water. Whether swimming, sailing or kayaking, I feel emotionally and physically caressed by the flowing water as I slip through it. Some images were taken from a moving car, offering a glimpse of the passing world, like each fleeting moment as we pass through time.”

The reception will be celebrated with fellowship and refreshments on Saturday, September 17 from 1-4 p.m. The gallery will follow all COVID-19 safety measures in place at the time of the reception.

Wild Hearts Gallery is an artists’ collective, supported by 16 local artists. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can also take a visual tour of the gallery by visiting wildheartsgallery.com.
